On the Way to Riobamba

5.30.18 On the Way to Riobamba

A last view of the old town of Quito and the Cathedral.

Our first stop was the Hacienda La Cienega - 300 years of history in an incredible setting.

The central area royal district of Quito experienced  frequent earthquakes, especially on February 22, 1757, when the "Terrible" earthquake destroyed almost all the churches and houses in Latacunga. The Cotopaxi volcano was also permanently in activity and the Quilotia volcano made its last eruption in December 1740. Despite all this geological activity, La Cienaga remained undamaged.

Some of the incredible furniture that cannot be sold.
Love the wood carvings on the sofa and chair armrests!

What a treat when we were served massive empanadas
and hot chocolate!

Stop #2 - Las casas del Perez - home and art museum of Aida Lopez...nothing can possibly prepare you for the amount of art in this home!  Wonderful lunch!

Amazing bathrooms!

Then onto Naranjo Roses to witness one of Ecuador's major exports - especially to the U.S. and Russia.

Amazing and backbreaking work done with minimal machines.

Back on the road until we reach a hostel for hikers and mountain climbers.  Here we find some llamas and an alpaca - just staring at us and wondering who we were.

When we stop to interview Juan, a man who leads his donkey 4 hours to the ice at the foot of the volcano, Chimborazo, we finally get a cloudless opportunity to photograph the volcano.

Juan and his family share their stories with us.

Tammy and Carole pose with the family after they purchase some warm hats
from the ladies.

Some sheep and a donkey stroll past our bus on their way back to the farm.

Our home for only one night sadly - Hacienda Abraspungo. Absolutely wonderful!

I definitely scored the best room -
named after the largest volcano (pictured above) - Chimborazo.
